Pension FAQ
Short answers to the questions asked most often about the Croatian old-age pension, under ZOMO and the 2026 HZMO decisions.
When can I retire?
Men at 65 years. Women are still inside the čl. 170 transition, which moves closer to 65 every year — see the table on the pension age page.
How many years of service do I need?
15 godina for an ordinary old-age pension. For an early pension the law is stricter and requires 35 godina.
How is the pension amount calculated?
Personal points (built from earnings and service) are multiplied by the current pension value — currently 14,84 € per point — then by the initial factor (čl. 83) and the pension factor (čl. 85). The method is set out on the how the pension is calculated page.
Is there a maximum pension?
There is, but its amount is not in ZOMO. Art. 5(13) defines the highest pension only by cross-reference — “determined in the manner prescribed by the Act governing the highest pension” — that is, by a separate statute. This site therefore states no figure: not because Croatia has no maximum, but because it is not in the Act this page is built on.
Can I retire early, and what does it cost?
Yes, at 60 years with 35 godina of service. It costs a reduction of 0,2 % for each month claimed early — but unlike some neighbouring systems, that reduction stops applying once the claimant turns 70.
